Events & Time Out

Ranked as part of the non-material cultural heritage of the canton of Vaud, the Brandons, the Servion Revue, the Circus Helvetia as well as various fairs and markets are traditions enhancing life in our region. In addition, there are festivals, theater plays and concerts designed for a large public.

Brandons – Carnival (Moudon)

Brandons – Carnival
«Brandons» is the name for the carnival in Northern Vaud. Going back to the Middle Ages, this tradition provided an opportunity to let off steam before the fasting period. The Brandons of Moudon are taking place at the beginning of March. They are famous for their «Guggenmusik», marching carnival bands.

Brocante – Flea Market
On the last weekend in May for nearly 20 years, this popular market has welcomed antique dealers, people in search of some rare items or participating locals, all bargaining in a friendly spirit. The setting in the upper town of Moudon lends it a particular charm.

Café-Théâtre Barnabé (Servion)

Café-Théâtre Barnabé
Transformed into a café-theatre in 1965 by Barnabé, an avid opera fan and revue producer, this former country barn has welcomed innumerable musicians and entertainers. Since 1998, the theatre boasts the largest cinema organ in Europe.

Cheese lovers will enjoy this guided tour to the production secrets of the soft cheeses Le Grand Pré and Gruyère AOP, made in Moudon from local quality milk. It includes a visit to the molasse caves where the loafs of Gruyère AOP cheese mature leisurely.

Concerts in the former prison
Set up in the former district prisons, now transformed into a cultural centre, the Prison concert hall hosts each year from October to May, a season of rock and electro concerts, organised by the Poly-Son Association. See the Agenda for details.

Each winter for more than 10 years, this vocal ensemble from the Vaudois Jura accompanied by the prestigious Ensemble des Cuivres Jurassien (Jurassian brass ensemble) has presented a musical show.

FestiMusiques
Since 2003, on the second weekend of June, this festival has gathered choirs, brass bands, accordionists, traditional and world music groups. Some hundred concerts are given for free on six stages throughout the town.

Helvetia Circus (Moudon)

Helvetia Circus
For the past 40 years, this private circus owned by the family Maillard, has been touring through Western Switzerland. Taking its winter quarters in Moudon, it offers a Christmas performance from the middle of December to the beginning of January. Since 2013, a school offers initiation courses in circus arts.

Jorat Theatre
In 1908, the Vaud writer René Morax opened this popular theatre, today a cultural touchstone in French Switzerland, out in the countryside. The charming wooden structure, listed as historical monument, saw the creation of Arthur Honegger’s “King David".

Les Planches Festival
Launched in 2012, the Planches Festival is unusual in being free, proposing only well-known or emerging Swiss musicians and in pursuing a charitable goal. The proceeds are donated to an association. It's taking place on the first weekend in June.

Pottery market
In 2004 this artisan market took place for the first time. Today it unites some fifty artisans and is organised on the last weekend of June in the picturesque centre of Lucens.

The tea dances are taking place every last Tuesday of the month between September and June, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., in the big Salle de la douane, the customs hall. Entrance is free, a reservation is recommended.

For the past 18 years, the Association Grenier Culture from October to April organises the theatrical season. There are two venues in the town: the Salle de la Douane (some 350 seats) and the Théâtre de la Corde (some 50 seats). Refer to the Agenda for details.
